Message from the department head
Welcome to the Systems and Biomedical Engineering Department (SBME), Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University. I am pleased that you are visiting SBME web site. SBME was inaugurated in 1976 and from the first graduation in 1980 till 2013, the number of graduates exceeded 3000 engineers who work in different engineering fields such as medical device design, Biomedical Informatics development, clinical engineering, and maintenance of medical equipment. As a multi-disciplinary department combining in its study Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Medical science, Biology, Physics, and mathematics, our graduates are unique and equipped with sufficient and strong state of the art knowledge, training and skills that allow them to enter all work fields. The department offers Diploma, Master, and PhD degrees. This year (2015), we have around 300 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students from Egyptian and international citizenship. We have 25 active faculty members and 14 teaching and research assistants with students to faculty ratio ~ 12. The department is looking forward by its professors with diverse expertise and laboratories in the areas of medical devices design and bioinformatics systems to be unique educational and research institution with a global standing to achieve its mission at all levels, educational, scientific and research, and community service. Furthermore, the department proposes and design solutions at the national level to benefit the economy of the country and the citizens by increasing the efficiency of medical service and its positive impact on citizens healthcare quality. Moreover, research provided by the professors of the department will contribute to the welfare and progress of the nation as well as the graduation of qualified engineers who are able to boost development in all fields and various disciplines within the department. Engineering education is most effective when it is fully integrated with active research and industry. SBME faculty and students are involved in a wide range of important and exciting research activities ranging from medical devices, Medical Imaging, Biomedical Informatics, Image and Signal Processing, Biomedical Systems and Control, Biomechanics, Clinical Engineering, and Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in medicine … to name a few. For our graduate programs, students are permitted to select any SBME faculty member as a thesis advisor. We believe that both our students and the SBME research mission are served best by placing our students in multidisciplinary teams, and we encourage them to find these opportunities. At SBME, faculty members work closely with their graduate students, and we also motivate our undergraduate students in our research. SBME is a great place to learn in a challenging and hands-on environment. SBME web site gives you the opportunity to further explore our academic programs, faculty members, labs, research, and to give you a sense of what it would be like to be a student here. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please feel free to contact me, or any faculty member in people page.
Thank you for visiting our web site, and our best wishes for your future endeavors.
